Australian War Memorial, Canberra

Problem - A solution was required that would remove natural gas-fired boilers and chillers, increase operational efficiency and be able to work across five adjacent public buildings.

Solution - 320 vertical closed loop boreholes, drilled up to 150 metres in a closed loop geothermal heat exchange system.

Outcome - The largest closed loop Geothermal Heat Exchange system in Australia that saves the Memorial $1 million a year compared to the old, conventional system. Highly modular with options to add additional buildings to the system.

Greenhouses

Problem - Covered crop growers are looking to geothermal heating for energy security as they transition away from fossil fuels, inspired by Dutch pioneers. However, it is still unclear which locations in New Zealand are feasible for this approach and what the cost benefits of switching are.

Solution - Earth Sciences NZ and GeoExchange NZ are funded by MPI, Vegetables NZ and Tomatoes NZ to produce an online subsurface mapping tool that includes financial feasibility of switching to geoheat in Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty.

Outcome - This project is due to be completed mid 2026. For now, track our progress here: https://www.gns.cri.nz/research-projects/decarbonising-covered-crops-with-low-temperature-geothermal/

Hammersmith City Hall, London

Problem - Hammersmith Town Hall & Civic Campus was undergoing refurbishment and needed a sustainable heating and cooling solution, ideally with no outdoor air handlers that would detract from the historic architecture.

Solution - A series of open loop bores that access London’s groundwater aquifers and supply a ground source heat pump network

Outcome - Reduced on-site energy demand from a combination of low energy appliances, solar panels and a ground source heat pumps. And a bonus of increased public spaces as roof terraces are free of plant equipment, meaning residents can enjoy stunning views of the River Thames and Hammersmith Bridge.
